Last Windy Ride in Wellington

Facing twenty-six hours traveling back to New York, I really wanted to get in a last long ride Friday morning. Nothing like several hours of hard cycling to make sitting (and eating) on a plane so much more bearable. So, just after 8:00 am I headed down the hill, making the turns very carefully as the road was slick and the winds blowing hard.

The idea was to go around the bays and then up Ngaio Gorge to Johnsonville and down to Makara, climbing that lovely hill one last time before departing Wellington.

So, the plan was to call this ride, Makara and then Pack(ara) but when I hit the top of Ngaio Gorge, I almost got blown off the side of the road by a wind gust. Not wanting to end my time in Wellington and board the plane after a spill, I headed back home rather than descending the back road from Johnsonville to Makara.

So, 2 hours 32 minutes, 2678 feet of vertical climbing and a very easy 121 average heart rate. Nice recovery ride and a wonderful way to burn 2434 calories before getting on board the flights home.
