Peak Fosythia Ride to Cold Spring

Forsythia02

Today's ride from Manhattan, across to New Jersey on the ferry and up along the Hudson River to Cold Spring was an adventure in brilliant yellow. It is peak day for my favorite of early spring flowering plants, the forsythia. At this time of year, the diciduous shrub produces brilliant yellow flowers before the leaves start to bud. The effect is stunning!

The photo above is looking north along the western shore of the Hudson River to the Bear Mountain Bridge, a mini-Golden Gate suspension style bridge that connects the two steep walls of the fjord, carved by glaciers during the last ice age. Forsythia07 Forsythia04

The ride today was just a touch longer than four hours, with lots of little rolling hills and some nice long flat stretches (although into a headwind.) 92.31 km and 1800 meters of climbing. Fosythia_ride_map
